Foods that aren't Vegetarian

When I first became vegetarian I realised that there was a lot of foods and drinks that I had previously presumed were vegetarian but to my surprise they weren’t.

Most gelatine comes from animal bones, connective tissue and organs.

Gelatine comes from cows, pigs etc. In some cases however gelatine can be plant based and in those cases it is suitable for a vegetarian diet.

Many sweets contain gelatine. Some of which are marshmallows, jellies, gummy bears, jelly, wagon wheels and any other jelly-type desserts.

Gelatin:

Sweets containing gelatin:

Beer:

It's common for breweries to use ingredients like gelatine or fish bladders as clarifying agents in their beer. For example Guinness.

Sweets with red colour die:

Many sweets that are red are usually like so because they contain Natural red #4 which is a pigment extracted from the dactylopius coccus costa insect which in simpler terms, is crushed up beetles. It can sometimes be listed as carmine or carminic acid

Worchester sauce:

Your average worchester sauce is made with anchovies. An anchovy is a type of fish therefore the sauce can't be eaten by any type of vegetarian or vegan.

White sugar:

Not all white sugars, but some, are bleached in a process which means running the sugar through "natural carbon" which is also known as charred cattle bones.
